If anyone involved is injured, let the dispatcher know. Report if anyone reports feeling ill, or complaining of nausea, pain or discomfort.
Whether you have visible injuries or not, it’s always a good idea to be evaluated by paramedics. If they’re not dispatched, it’s a wise idea to make arrangements to see your regular physician as soon as possible after the crash to rule out injury.
After help has arrived, you’ll be required to share your name, address, and registration number with those involved in the accident. Of course, other motorists, passengers or pedestrians involved in the accident must share information with you, as well.
Try to obtain the phone numbers of everyone involved in the accident. It’s helpful to obtain license plate numbers and models of the other vehicles. Although you may be flustered, you should make an attempt to obtain the driver’s license number and insurance information.
The key information to exchange when you are involved in an accident includes:
- Name, address and contact details of all people involved in the accident
- Driver license numbers of all drivers involved
- License plate number, make and model of the vehicles involved
- Auto insurance information for the motorists involved.
- Names and contact details of witnesses
- Names and badge numbers of all police officers who were at the scene of the accident
If you are able, it could be helpful to take photographs at the scene of the accident.
